Turning Collective Visions into Living Reality
By Amir Zadah, Guus Verelst & Yassen Youriev Stoyanov
What if project management didn't start with deadlines and pressure but with dreams, connection, and genuine excitement? That's exactly where Dragon Dreaming begins.
It all started in March, when 27 international youth work enthusiasts arrived at Sunny Hill in Slovenia for an 8-day training course, coordinated by Veles Projects and funded by the Erasmus+ programme. None of us quite knew what to expect. As Guus recalls: "We actually came here to learn project management tools, but I did not expect that it would be such an immersive experience." That feeling of pleasant surprise was something many of us shared from the very first day.
Veles, a non-profit organisation based in Slovenia, has an approach that mirrors Dragon Dreaming in a fundamental way: theory is always passed through implementation, and people are invited to experience rather than merely learn. What unfolded over those eight days was more than a training. It became a lived demonstration of everything the methodology stands for.
Four Phases, One Living Cycle
Born from a blend of Indigenous wisdom, systems thinking, and decades of facilitation practice, Dragon Dreaming is a radically different way of creating projects, one that taps into natural flow, collective intelligence, and deep human connection. At its core, it embraces a dynamic cycle of four phases: dreaming, planning, doing, and celebrating. Each phase is essential and skipping one weakens the entire project. Most conventional projects overemphasize planning and doing. Dragon Dreaming restores the balance, opening space for those powerful AHA-moments that can redefine a project entirely.
Collective Creation: Growing Together
Instead of building projects alone, participants co-create from the beginning. Through tools like the Dream Circle, individual ideas are shared, witnessed, and woven into a collective vision. Every participant becomes a mirror. You don't just work on a project; you grow through the perspectives and insights of others. For Amir, this was one of the most memorable parts of the whole experience: " I really valued the group dynamic and found the other participants incredibly inspiring. The Dream Circle, where we shared our visions was a highlight for me.” Another participant echoed this: "Being surrounded by youth workers with social projects from so many countries was a very empowering experience. This experience turned our group of very different participants into a very warm collective."
Listening Deeply, Leading Differently
Dragon Dreaming introduces Pinakarri, an Aboriginal concept of deep, attentive listening. When teams integrate it, conversations become more meaningful, decisions feel more grounded, and the group naturally moves toward coherence. This isn't just a soft skill, it's a strategic advantage. It was one of those elements that, once experienced in the room, was impossible to ignore. Dragon Dreaming also challenges traditional hierarchies by promoting empty center organisations, where the system exists to support the people and the dream. Responsibility flows toward enthusiasm, not just competence. The person most excited about a task leads it. Projects become living systems: adaptive, resilient, and deeply human.
Celebration as an Essential Phase
Most project frameworks treat celebration as optional. Dragon Dreaming treats it as essential. It's where learning is integrated, relationships are strengthened, and energy is renewed. And crucially, the methodology is never just taught, it is enacted. As Guus puts it: "All Dragon Dreaming theory was directly applied to the group process, in a very natural way. It was so well designed. Because of this, our extremely diverse group became a tight collective in just a few days. Dreams came alive, and people were very energized. We experienced a living example of what this method can do."
A New Way Forward
In a world facing complex challenges, we don't just need better plans, we need better ways of working together. Dragon Dreaming offers a framework that integrates purpose, people, and planet, turning collaboration into a powerful, joyful force. Because when people come together with shared purpose and genuine presence, projects stop being tasks. They become something meaningful. That much, all 27 of us can confirm.
